This Greek Revival mansion was built for Frederick Stanton in 1857. Stanton owned cotton plantations in Louisiana, and was a cotton broker. He didn't enjoy his home for long, he died in 1859, but his family lived in it until 1894. Today the home is owned by the Pilgrimage Garden Club, and it is a National Historic Landmark. bluerim on Flickr: Posted a Photo
This old building in Natchez Under-the Hill has a sign on it that advertises a whiskey. Natchez-Under the hill was the rough and tumble side of Natchez. It was full of saloons, gambling halls, "ladies of the evening," and riverboat men from everywhere. Much of Natchez-Under the Hill was washed away during severe flooding. Some folks said, good riddance, but others missed the bawdy part of town.
The company listed in the advertisement is the I. Trager Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. That company did business under that name from 1908 to 1918. bluerim on Flickr: Posted a Photo
The Illinois Central Railroad marked it's centennial year of operation in 1951 with the commissioning of this and other like markers that were given to towns and cities served by the railroad. This marker is located in Natchez.
The two medallions depicted on the marker are replicas of the obverse and reverse of the Centennial Medal the railroad commissioned for the celebration. The obverse features the symbol the railroad used from 1950 to 1966. The reverse replica features a map of Mid-America with the railroad line's rail routes on it.
Markers like this one can still be found in towns and cities that were served by the railroad. bluerim on Flickr: Posted a Photo
